Custom Sign Up

What's the typical design with SFS for a sign up? I've got the login working with a back end DB but If i try to make a custom extension call to create an account I will be told that the caller isn't a user and that it has been disregarded.

I thought about using an inital zone that anyone gets automatically logged into as a guest and can then register but I've also come across the sign up assistant but I can't find enough documentation to provide an answer to my question which is, can I make use of the sign up assistant without having the user logged into a zone first?

Yes, you're right. You can login the non signed up user in a special Zone that is used only for creating a new account, then you can logout and login again in the application Zone with the new credentials.
